Tartar removal: what should I expect?

Tartar is hardened plaque that has attached to the teeth. It cannot be removed reliably with brushing at home, so professional cleaning may be needed from time to time.

Why does it matter?

Tartar makes it harder to keep the teeth and gumline clean. It can contribute to gum inflammation, bleeding, unpleasant breath and, over time, may affect the health of the supporting tissues around the teeth.

What happens during treatment?

During the appointment, the dentist or dental hygienist removes tartar and deposits, then cleans and smooths the surfaces. The exact method and duration depend on the amount of buildup and the condition of the gums.

What can I expect afterwards?

  • the teeth may feel smoother and cleaner,
  • the gums may be slightly sensitive for a short time,
  • temporary sensitivity to cold can occur,
  • you may receive personalised advice about brushing and interdental cleaning.
